ARMENIAN PAINTING OF SAINT SARKIS & SAINT MARDIROS

Item noM1632

This oil on canvas is painted with tempera colors. The two saints in the image are depicted on horseback, one seated behind the other, each holding a long piece of armory. The hand of God emerges from the sky, giving the Saints his blessing. There is no canvas surrounding the painting, instead the artist painted a border of flowering foliage on three sides. At the bottom is a border filled with inscriptions indicating that the painting was executed for the church of Saint Thomas in Northern Iran by the Father of the donor, Salmast Melik Stepan of Hafduvan.
